Chinese Tomato Sauce

Here’s my mum’s easy Chinese-style tomato sauce recipe. We pour this sauce over leftover pork chops, but it goes well with chicken and fish as well.

Typically, some may add vinegar to this recipe to make it a Chinese sweet and sour sauce, but my family omitted the vinegar as the tomato sauce is already naturally tangy. In place, my mum added cut chillis and chilli sauce for mild heat.  I love the fact that my mum does not use cornstarch for thickening the sauce; instead she simmer it to reduce the sauce slightly to the right consistency. The result is really good!

  1. Oh ya, indeed, there is just always something different about Chinese-style tomato sauce, but they are always so tasty and may I say, the best to make any dish go from plain to just flavorful!:-) Love the fiery color of your sauce, and I can already feel the awesome taste of that sweet and sour (with a tinge of spicy) in that!
Happy New Year 2014 to you and your family!:-)

  2. Reminds me of Hainanese pork chops with the sauce :)

It’s true when you simmer tomatoes and onions, it will just thicken naturally and so good! that is how I cook those Indian-style egg curries too.

  3. Delicious and versatile sauce, goes very well with the pork chops.
