Thai Supermarket in Singapore
When I was researching my latest recipe, Thai basil chicken stir-fry, I was wondering where I can find Thai holy basil in Singapore. This particular type of basil is very rare outside of Thailand and I have never seen it at our local wet markets or supermarkets. I decided to try my luck at Golden Mile Complex, since it is also known as “Little Thailand” as it is frequented by the Thai community in Singapore.
I hit the jackpot because there was a huge “Thai Supermarket” there. Literally, that’s the name of the supermarket! It sells all kinds of Thai products, from edibles to toiletries to crockery! I really feel like I had been to transported to Thailand while I was there :) I took photos on my iPhone6 Plus to share on my blog, mainly of products which interest me as a cook.
The easiest way to get to Golden Mile Complex via public transport is to take the circle line and alight at Nicoll Highway MRT Station (CC5). Take the Concourse exit and walk the overhead bridge to Keypoint. A short 5 minutes walk from Keypoint will take you to the famous Golden Mile Food Centre or better known as “Army Market” (lots of yummy food there!). Walk past the market a little more, you will see an overhead bridge which brings you directly to the second floor of Golden Mile Complex (pictured above). The Thai supermarket is located on the same floor. I find that this is the safest route for walking. If you are walking on the opposite side (meaning same side of Golden Mile Complex), be careful of major construction and tour coaches.
When you enter the supermarket by the main entrance, you will see some food stalls. There are many Thais taking away finger foods from the stalls.
Like I mentioned, what really brought me here was because I was looking for Thai holy basil, rare everywhere else but aplenty right here, and at S$1 for a large bundle! They also sell Thai sweet basil and lemon basil. I was told that they restock the basil every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday after 11 am.

I love to get their bundled coriander with spring onion. Usually I can get this combo only at wet markets.
They sell seasonal fruits imported from Thailand. See these mini pineapples? I actually carried them back from Bangkok to make Thai pineapple rice (all my holiday shopping revolved around my food blog), back when I couldn’t find the mini ones in Singapore. Why mini pineapples? The are sweeter and more photogenic :)
Many more seasonal fruits from Thailand, such as green papaya and mangoes.
I love to buy these cut fruits home, I chose only those packed on the same day. Do you see the guava (second one)? The outer skin looks candied (neon green) to me, and it’s very yummy. The sachet of powder is similar to our sour plum powder with a spicy touch. I love it.

I actually bought these Tom Yum pastes from Siam Paragon Bangkok. I use it for my tom yum goong recipe. So now I know where to buy them locally.
The dark blue “Penguin” zig zag peeler is awesome, and recommended by one of the Thai auntie working there. It is great for julienning mango and papaya for Thai salads, and for making decorative cuts on vegetables. I had a hard time looking for this tool and almost got one from eBay which was selling for a lot more.
They also have that classic blue-white Thai crockery. I lugged many of these crockery all the way back from JJ Market a few years ago for my food photography :D Yes, I did mention my holiday shopping always revolve around the blog ;)
This is another great ingredient that is not easily found in Singapore. These baby shrimps are great for mango salad and papaya salad. Back then, I substituted with Japanese shrimp (very similar) but now I know where to get the real stuff.
And of course they sell various brands of fish sauces. Fish sauce is the soul of Thai cooking, and it’s a little different from the Chinese or Vietnamese fish sauces (though can be interchangeably used if you are not hardcore about it). I think the most popular and common brand in Thailand is Tiparos (pictured above). This brand is not available (I think) at our major supermarkets.
I bought these bamboo steamers after searching high and low at JJ Market (I don’t think you are shocked by now). They are very difficult to find outside of Thailand. I use them for steaming sticky rice (mango sticky rice recipe).
Besides Thai produce, there is also a “Product of Vietnam” section selling Vietnamese products.
Ok, there is a lot more stuff they sell (toiletries, dried goods, instant noodles, beverages). I basically featured some of the items which interest me. It’s a pretty big and well-stocked place, you can see it occupy a sizeable space (pictured above) at the mall. There are also many small stalls downstairs if you want to price-check. I bought bottles of ointments (used to buy it from Boots in Bangkok) at a much cheaper price downstairs than at the supermarket. There are also a lot of Thai eateries which I have not tried, because I always eat at Army market. Hope you find this post useful if you are into Thai cooking, or looking for hard-to-find Thai products. Most of the staff working here are Thais, most of the customers are Thais, they sell everything Thai. This place really make me feel I am in Thailand. Whenever I need help with ingredients, both customers and staff will help me in English, to the best of their ability. I truly feel that the Thais are generally a very kind, gentle and polite race, which is the same feeling I get in Thailand. Have fun shopping!

Woah, I think I can spend a long time in this supermarket..just by looking around :) I have one of those vegetable julienne peelers, not sure if they are exactly the same but similar; and it is indeed useful.
Now I need to find out about Thai holy basil vs the usual Thai (sweet) basil. What is the main difference? Then there is also holy basil and sweet basil that is non-Thai (at least not indicated as “Thai” in the store). Not sure what is the difference again, between those and the Thai counterparts.

Thai sweet basil smells and tastes like the western sweet basil (to me). For holy basil, it has a slight medicinal taste, not typical “basily” at all. I’m bad at describing taste! There is also a Thai lemon basil which I have not used before, not sure which dish. Yes, same here, I spend a long time browsing the supermarket, reminisce my Bangkok holiday keke
