Today I am featuring a different type of recipe for a change: a DIY hair mask using food ingredients. Avocados are in season now, and I am enjoying the on-sale avocados with an all-natural DIY hair mask, sans preservatives and chemicals.

Avocados are often used in beauty products for their hydrating and nourishing properties. To me, nothing beats pampering oneself at home with a natural avocado hair treat. This mask is perfect for those with dry scalp or/and dry hair due to the moisturising properties of avocado. The recipe calls for olive oil, but if you have colour-treated hair, you might want to substitute with jojoba or sweet almond oil (Use my affiliate code “WIF026″ for $5 off first order if you are ordering from iHerb.com), as olive oil may lighten hair highlights.

  1. can we substitute the olive oil for vegetable oil?

  2. What is the shelf Life of this product and does it have to be refridgerated, if not being used immediately?

  3. I tried it for the first time today. Two weeks ago, I bid farewell to harsh chemicals. I did a lemon and honey mask for my face and it is absolutely fabulous – goodbye to endless oily face. The lemon is an astringent and honey, a moisturizer.
As for the avocado hair mask, I mashed one ripened avocado, a tablespoon of honey and some Amla oil ( very popular with Indians ). I mixed all together and applied it on my dry hair, I thereafter massaged my hair thoroughly and covered with a shower cap for about 40 minutes. I washed it off with a shampoo after. I’m however confused, some sites recommend the hair mask on dry hair, while others on damp hair.
I’m African by the way, female with very chemically damaged hair and unsightly receding hairline at 33 years and I’m hoping to regrow my hair back soonest using natural remedies.

  4. I read up on this while I was at work so i called to tesco on my way home n bought 2 advacados (for 2 pound may I add) I went home and followed the steps and within 2 hours I genuinely had beautiful hair!! It wasnt that gross i mushed it n mixed it slapped it in my hair n sat eating my tea and watching tv for a cpl of hours. I washed it out blow dryed it n hey presto im now laid in bed with the softest straightest hair ive had in a long time! Im just hoping it helps my hair repair and not just cover up the problem as my hair has been living abroad in the red hot sun for 2 years and been dyed numerous times and damaged even further once I returned to england

  5. Will this mask help my teenagers boys dry scalp?

  6. Awesome! Can’t wait to try this Avocado hair mask! I’ve previously used Coconut oil mixed with Olive oil. But feel that your recipe will probably work better for my hair. Thank you!

  7. Can’t wait to try this, my hair is super dry at the moment and needs some tlc! Thankyou. :)

  8. Okay so I have my debs (prom) on Friday, and I want my hair to be all shiny and nice. However I’m worried that if I do this mask on Friday morning, it might make my hair greasy for the event. Has anyone had any grease problems with the mask? Should I do it on Thursday to be safe? Any advice would be greatly appreciated :)

    • I think everyone’s hair reacts differently. If you can, try it out as early as possible, so that you can see for yourself how this mask works for you.
