Home made lemonade
A refreshing cup of home-made lemonade

Until I’ve attempted to make my own lemonade, I didn’t realise how ridiculously simple and cheap it is to make this at home. A pitcher cost less than a dollar to make (to be exact, the pitcher I made cost me about S$0.50). We have lemonade and lemonade-related drinks on the table almost every day now. This drink tastes refreshing especially in our hot tropical climate, is a huge source of vitamin C and it is a wonderful thirst quencher. I decided to make my own lemonade after I discovered a very slight chemical taste in my favourite lemonade stall. Now that I managed to recreate it at home, sans the chemical taste, this is added to our list of fnb we will NOT order outside. No chemicals or artificial syrup, just pure lemon juice, sugar and water. As B said, the more stuff I discovered how to make at home, the less food choices we have outside, lol :P

Home made lemonade

Ingredients
(makes a small pitcher, about 0.75 litres)

– 1/2 cup (roughly 100g) of caster sugar (you can use normal white sugar too, slightly more)
– 1 cup boiling water
– juice of 1 lemon, remove seeds collected in the juicer with a spoon
– 500ml chilled water
– lemon wedges

Directions
1. Make the sugar syrup by dissolving 1/2 cup of caster sugar with 1 cup of boiling water. Chill the syrup in fridge for an hour or till cold*
2. Combine lemon juice, chilled water, chilled sugar syrup and lemon wedges (for added lemon aroma) in a glass pitcher. Serve immediately.
3. If you are not serving this immediately, put a lid on the pitcher before placing in the fridge so as to prevent vitamins loss. Or serve with ice cubes. Consume within a day if possible.

Notes:
– *If you are not going to consume this right away, then you don’t have to used chilled sugar syrup and water. Just remember to put a lid on the pitcher before refrigeration to prevent loss of vitamin C.
– The above proportions are based on my preference; I like my lemonade to be sour but also slightly sweet. Adjust the recipe to your own taste by playing around with the amount of lemon juice, sugar and water added. For example, if you like very sour lemonade, add juice of 1 1/2 lemons instead of 1 lemon. If you are using meyer lemons which are sweeter than normal lemons, you will need to adjust the amount too.
